Design, development and delivery of Policy, Procedure, Protocol and Guideline (PPPGs) blended learning training programmes

Introduction:

The aim of this Quality Improvement project was to develop a blended training programme to support staff in the development of Policy, Procedures, Protocols and Guidelines (PPPG’s).  The previous training programme was a two hour presentation and was no longer fit for purpose.  PPPGs are essential in setting the boundaries within which we operate. They guide us in standardising clinical practice, test and improve our services and foster a greater level of understanding and co-operation amongst our colleagues.

Methodology:

A project team was established once funding was agreed from The Meath Foundation. Terms of reference agreed and all meetings were recorded. Other training programmes were researched and found not suitable to meet the needs of staff. 83% of staff were identified as belonging to generations X, Y and Z and blended learning fulfilled their preferred learning styles.  

Improvements instigated:

The updated training programme consists of both e-learning module (45 minutes) which focuses on how to develop PPPG’s. The one hour virtual classroom module provides practical advice and instruction on how to complete and format the PPPG templates. This fulfils the multigenerational learning style requirement.  The e-learning programme is hosted on the hospital’s Learning Management System (LMS) www.hse.land.ie . A number of podcasts (24) were also recorded and uploaded to the Quality, Safety & Risk Management intranet site as an additional support tool. 

Evaluation/Benefits: 

Continuous assessment showed an overall improvement in development of PPPGs and staff have commented that they find them very useful and also use them as a resource post training. The Irish Institute of Training & Development presented Project Lead, Averil Larke, with an award for the “Best Digital Learning Initiative”.
