The Meath Foundation Research Laboratory

The Meath Foundation Research Laboratory (MFRL) is a cornerstone of the research and innovation ecosystem at Tallaght University Hospital (TUH). Established through the vision and support of the Meath Foundation, the laboratory reflects the Foundation’s enduring commitment to advancing healthcare through research, education and innovation. Since its creation, the MFRL has provided a dedicated space where clinical questions arising in TUH can be translated into high-quality research with direct relevance to patient care.

The laboratory represents a unique partnership between:

  • The Meath Foundation, whose sustained investment in research, education and innovation has created the environment for hospital-based research to flourish.
  • Trinity College Dublin (TCD) School of Medicine, which designates TUH as one of its principal teaching hospitals and brings academic excellence across multiple disciplines.
  • Tallaght University Hospital, whose Research & Innovation Strategy commits to embedding research at the heart of clinical care.

Since its establishment, the MFRL has:

  • Supported research across more than twelve disciplines, including microbiology, gastroenterology, psychiatry, neurology and geriatrics.
  • Provided specialist facilities, expertise and a biorepository to enable world-class clinical studies.
  • Helped TUH clinicians and scientists deliver research that directly impacts patient care, diagnostics and treatment strategies.
  • Maintained the highest standards of governance and compliance, including HPRA-audited facilities.

The MFRL is both a symbol and a driver of TUH’s research culture: the Foundation provides the support, TCD brings academic strength, and TUH ensures clinical translation. Together, they form a research ecosystem that benefits patients, staff and the wider community.
